Jazz Samba Specifications

Guitarist Charlie Byrd was invited to travel and play in Brazil during a cultural goodwill tour sponsored by the Kennedy administration in 1961. He was completely enamoured by the music, and when he returned, he headed straight for the recording studio to make the now classic Jazz Samba. Collaborating with Stan Getz on tenor sax and backed by a band that included Gene Byrd (bass, guitar), Keter Betts (bass), and Buddy Deppenschmidt and Bill Reichenbach (drums), Byrd forged a new and brilliant sound. American record companies were to churn out hundreds of watered bossa-pop albums that have since given the style its lounge-addled image, but this album stands as a tribute to the vitality and adaptability of jazz. --Louis Gibson

Latin Guitar (Digitally Remastered)

Latin Guitar (Digitally Remastered) Review

Brazilian master guitarist Laurindo Almeida first came to prominence in the US as a member of Stan Kenton's band during the height of its success in the 1940s and then became one of the world's most sought after studio musicians. In 1953 he recorded two of the first Brazilian styled jazz albums with Bud Shank called Brazilliance, which led to sessions with Baden Powell, Stan Getz and Herbie Mann, among others. In 1961, Almeida won multiple Grammy Awards for Best Engineered Album, Classical and Best Chamber Music Performance. The following year he won Grammy Awards for Best Classical Performance - Instrumental Soloist or Duo and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. .The rare mid-1970's album presented here features Almeida's guitar with Chuck Flores (percussion) and Mike Lanf (keyboards), and finally sees the light of day in the digital domain. All selections newly remastered.
